Majub‘s journey (Majubs Reise)

During the Nazi era, Bayume Mohamed Husen performed with German cinema stars such as Heinz Rühmann, Zarah Leander and Hans Albers whenever the screenplay specified that an African be cast in a role. During the First World War he was a colonial soldier, fighting for Germany in Tansania. He died as a victim of National Socialism in the concentration camp at Sachsenhausen. But his name, sadly, is so far unknown. The film uses archive material and other evidence to reconstruct and recount the incredible life and fantastic journey of this determined and funloving man.

Eva Knopf studied cultural anthropology in Göttingen, rhetoric/film theory at the University of California in Berkeley and documentary filmmaking at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg. She teaches visual and media anthropology at the Freie Universität Berlin and is a research fellow for the project “History of Documentary Film in Germany”, funded by the German Research Foundation.
