A day on the barely inhabited Norwegian island of Hestmannøy. Against this giant landscape the few remaining islanders live a simple life: distributing the mail, ploughing the fields, knitting, baking waffles and milking cows. There’s a hint of more prosperous times past: in the now closed school an award for the “Best Junior School 1981” still stands. And the modern world sometimes peeps in, for example when the national telephone marketing service calls, and farmer Kurt happily confesses that he hasn’t watched TV for 30 years. Meanwhile he spends the evenings by candlelight with his cat, while the northern lights illuminate the sky.
Originally from Northern Norway, 27-year old director Trond Kvig Andreassen is currently studying documentary film at Lillehammer University College. Previously he studied Film Theory at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. He has a preference for subjects and people outside society. |
